TREKKING IN NEPAL

MAKALU & KANCHENJUNGA REGION

Makalu and Kanchenjunga both the regions are located in the Eastern Nepal. Both these regions have derived their name from the highest mountains in the Eastern Nepal, Makalu 8,475m and Kanchenjunga 8,598m of which the latter is the third highest mountain in the world.

MAKALU: This is one of the most remote and unfrequented trekking areas of Nepal. This region is the place of Makalu Barun National Park which was established in 1992 as Nepal's eight national park. This region is subject to all the rules relating entry fee of US $ 10, fees for video cameras and restriction on firewood. The nearest airstrip in this region is Tumlingtar.

KANCHENJUNGA: This region was opened for trekkers in 1998 only but lots of mountaineering groups were already accessing this route for their attempt to summit the mountain. This region is largely inhabited by Rai and Limbu who are known to be very friendly people. It is a very long way from Kathmandu and is also one of the most difficult trekking areas since nothing is available such as lodge, tea houses or any essential material for trekkers. Therefore, trekking in this region can be done only through organised camping group will full gears and food stuff carried all the way from Kathmandu. The permit to trek in this region is given by the Immigration office to groups only.
